With a population of 1.5 million residents, few hobby breeders, and zero retail sales of dogs if IR 1545 is enacted. . .Where will Suffolk County families get dogs in the future?
IR 1545 is designed to abolish legal pet shops, criminalize the sale of puppies, and force families to purchase dogs from a shelter or rescue !
Shelters and rescue organizations. . .
- do not pay taxes in the community.
- are generally unregulated and uninspected by any public authority.
- rarely have puppies available.
- are exempted from the New York State "Pet Lemon Law." Shelter and rescue customers are not supported by the consumer protection law. Consumers ARE protected with purchases made from state licensed, regulated pet stores.
- are unable to offer a wide range of purebred dogs.
- may not be the option you wish to choose when purchasing a new pet.
It will worsen -- not improve -- the problem of dogs sold by facilities which should be licensed under state and/or federal law.
Licensed, regulated pet stores offering dogs from inspected and well-managed facilities are a responsible choice for some families. Not everyone prefers a shelter dog. Not everyone can locate a dog from a hobby breeder.
